The Flash Technique
A gentle option for highly distressing memories.
The Flash Technique was developed by Dr. Philip Manfield and originally introduced as a preparation-phase intervention within EMDR therapy.

Minimal conscious attention to the memory
During the structured procedure, the client primarily focuses on a positive, engaging activity or experience. The distressing memory remains in the background and is contacted only briefly.
The clinical goal is to reduce the disturbance associated with the experience so the memory becomes more manageable. Flash does not erase the memory.
Flash may be considered when:
- A memory feels too painful to approach directly
- There is significant fear of trauma processing
- Additional preparation is needed before EMDR
- A less verbally detailed approach is appropriate
- Distress interferes with beginning standard processing
Flash is not hypnosis.
You remain aware, present, and in control. You can pause or discontinue the procedure at any time.
Although originally developed within EMDR preparation, Flash is a distinct technique. Its use follows clinical assessment and collaborative treatment planning.
