Progressive Counting
A structured approach to trauma resolution.
Progressive Counting is a distinct trauma-processing method developed by psychologist Dr. Ricky Greenwald.

How Progressive Counting works
During Progressive Counting, the client briefly imagines a distressing experience as a mental movie while the therapist counts aloud in gradually increasing and decreasing sequences.
This creates repeated, time-limited opportunities for the memory to be activated, processed, and updated without requiring prolonged immersion or a detailed verbal account.
Progressive Counting:
- Does not require eye movements
- Uses brief imaginal exposure within structured counting
- Does not require detailed narration of every aspect
- Can be integrated into phased trauma treatment
- May offer an alternative trauma-processing method
Different from EMDR
Progressive Counting and EMDR are distinct approaches. The method selected depends on your clinical needs, preferences, readiness, and treatment goals.
As with EMDR, treatment begins with assessment, preparation, emotional regulation, and consideration of whether trauma processing is appropriate.
